First Annual Ramsay Park Lights Ona After School

The City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services Celebrated it first annual Lights on After School at the Ramsay Park Family Center on October 18, 2007.Our Lights on After School Special event consisted of live performances from local flokoric groups, entertainment from a local magician and a keynote from one our city council members.

With a total of 145 community members attending our event it turned out to be a fun and succesful community gathering. People enjoyed delicious fruits and vegetables from our local food bank which provide the delicious snacks as well with a partnership with Mi Pueblo Food Market provided the main dish. Twenty pounds of BBQ meat and tortillas were donated on behalf of the event to provide a delicious main dish of Tacos to the public of the City of Watsonville. As our goal during the event was also to focus on promoting health and wellness many individuals took advantages of the free snacks and nothing went to waste.

Arts and crafts were available to youth who participated in the event where they were able to decorate a lightbulb on behalf of lights on after school. Knowing the fact that we are a drop in facilty this was a great opportunity for us to promote our own activities as well. With Halloween coming we decided to also have a station where kids were also allowed to make Halloween decorations.

Once all of our participants had a chance to get some snacks and get a taste of our drop in activities we then moved our event to our gynasium where we had live performances from a local high school flokloric group open our event which was the PVHS Sueos Aztecas who performed amazingly which captured youth and adults attention. Soon after we had our keynote which was recited by our District four City Council Member Kimberly Peterson. During her keynote she emphasized the benefit of having after school programs like ours as she also recited some experiences in which she went through when she was growing up. She was also able to put in exaple the fact of how people with no after school programs are affected by not having such wonderful resources. Soon after we had a second performance by a local non profit flokloric group "Grupo Genesis". This group had a variety of age group that performed from school age kids to high school kids. They were able to show the public a way to be a part of a fun and enriched in culture afterschool program.

Our closing performance was given by a local magician, Mickey Magic, which was able to do some crowd trick throughout our event. During his performance he was able to have all the children very involved where kids and some adults were part of the tricks. Soon after his performance we wrapped up the event with a raffle where we gave out some fun and mind stimulating board games to the public. From the surveys collected from the event we were able to recognize the publics opinion about our event with a satisfactory and above satisfactory outcome of our event. Many people are looking forward for next years event as we are planning to making our event within our department of the City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services a Division event to creat community through people, parks and programs
